Van Life Expectations vs. Reality: The Things Nobody Tells You

We all have the vision: us, our van, a pristine, unchartered mountain biking trail, and perfect solitude. We see the photoshopped ads and the aspirational YouTube videos.

Then, reality hits.

When you transition to van life β€” or RV life β€” you think you’re just changing your address. What you’re actually doing is signing up for a total physical, logistical, and metaphysical transformation. You cannot possibly plan for all the changes, so the real key to happiness is understanding yourself and embracing the inevitable identity crisis. So today, I’m talking to you about some Van Life Expectations vs. Reality. The Things that Nobody tells you!

The Grand Transformation: Letting Go of the "Old You".

Van or RV life forces a massive, unexpected change in your priorities.

I was in top shapeβ€”resting heart rate in the 40s, elite athlete shape. That’s gone. I fought it. I tried to maintain a two-hour-a-day training schedule, driving an hour out of my way to hit a Planet Fitness. Eventually, I realized it just wasn’t worth it.

The Old Priorities Dissolve: My very healthy, mostly vegan diet? Totally gone for the sake of tacos and spaghetti with hotdogs as I prioritize efficiency over culinary joy. Oreos? Yeah, that’s a food group now, somewhere right below the peanut butter and jelly on the van life triangle.

The Metaphysical Shift: You will find that whether it’s doing laundry at a Laundromat or getting comfortable sleeping in random parking lots, your life is about to change in the most unexpected ways. You simply can’t plan for it. You have to be ready to let go of old assumptions, conventions, expectations, and desires.

The Wisdom: Embrace that transformation and realize that new priorities and new goals will bring you joy. “Super in shape Ty” is sleeping; “healthy but normal Ty” is thriving. And that’s okay. Your new goals are valid.

The Myth of Constant Community.

The expectation, often sold in glossy videos, is that you’ll be surrounded by friendly faces, instantly making lifelong friends.

The Costly Reality: Sometimes, van or RV life is intensely lonely. Sometimes, you park alone. You have to actively hunt for community (like finding a Thousand Trails BaseCamp), and when you find it, you have to be ready to be “on.”

The Wisdom: This life will force you to become deeply comfortable with yourself. You must learn to enjoy your own company. Know your social fuel. You’ll have to trade the deep, consistent friend groups of a fixed life for brief, intense, and often wonderful connections on the road. Embrace the beautiful quiet moments.

Know Thyself: Why Your Biggest Fear Dictates Your Path.

This isn’t metaphysical B.S.; it’s reality.

I’m going to tell you a secret: I have a tremendous, anxiety-inducing fear of getting lost. When I picked out my Winnebago Revel, I had visions of going miles and miles off-road, deep into BLM land, and camping for a weeks at a time.

The Expectation vs. Reality: I haven’t done that at all. Have I gone off lots of forest roads? Sure. Have I camped in remote locations? Absolutely. But the truth is, I don’t stray far from main Forest Service roads. If I’m being honest with myself, about two-thirds of my time is actually spent in established campgrounds (Thousand Trails, National Parks, etc.) or parking lots.

The Enlightenment: I bought a van optimized for a fantasy life, not my actual life. Had I been honest with myself and my use case β€” a guy who loves comfort and fears getting lost β€” I might have bought a different rig and saved myself $5,000+ in accessories I’ll likely never use. (See more in my post on the $5,000 of purchases I regret.) And here’s the kicker: I eventually took my own advice. I got honest about who I actually am and traded the van for a Super C RV β€” the rig that fits my real life instead of the fantasy one.

The New Age Conclusion: Before you invest in van or RV life, spend some time getting to know your real self. Not the aspirational, magazine-cover version, but the real, slightly anxious person who needs a hot shower and good cell service. Embrace your limitations and fears, because that self-knowledge is the most valuable accessory you can pack.

πŸ’‘ The Most Valuable Accessory Is a QuestionSelf-knowledge beats any gadget. Before you spend a dime, run through the questions nobody tells you to ask β€” the honest gut-check that keeps you from buying the fantasy instead of the life.

A Little Bit About Me.

I started writing this blog as a way to capture the adventurous and free lifestyle I’m privileged to live. I’ve traveled to over 28 countries and 35 U.S States. I’ve lived aboard in multiple countries and averaged over 100 days a year of travel for work. I’ve skied and hiked all over the world – and my new obsession is mountain biking.

What I bring to you isn’t AI generated. It’s based on my feet on the ground – or sometimes conversations with locals.Β Click here to read more about me!
