Thousand Trails Palm Springs: Glitz, Glamour, and the Live Free RV Guide

When I booked my stay at Thousand Trails (TT) Palm Springs, I had no idea what to expect. This place is “Ultra High Use”—not just busy, but so packed that once you’re in, you have to leave for 28 days just to give the land (and the rangers) a breather. Clearly, the RV world knows something I didn’t.

After a week of navigating the “hippy-spirit-meets-Hollywood-glam” vibe of the Coachella Valley, I get it. If you’re ready for a jam-packed schedule, here’s how I turned this desert pitstop into a 5-day adventure.

TT Palm Springs is desirable because of its location — and undesirable because of its location. It’s a strategic basecamp, not a nature retreat, and it leans all the way into that. Float in the pool and squint a little and you can almost believe you’re a 1960s movie star at a desert oasis escape. (Almost.)

The location is the whole pitch. You’re less than a mile from a Walgreens and groceries — walkable if you don’t mind a bit of a hike — and 20 minutes from every major attraction in the valley. The catch is the I-10, which runs right along the front of the park. My quiet score is a 2, and I’m being generous. Bring a white noise machine.

Insider tip: the farther toward the rear of the park you are, the better. The front sites eat the freeway; the back is meaningfully calmer. Most of the edge sites are seasonal, so they may not be available — book early and ask for a rear site when you do.

On the sites themselves: they’re very level — I watched plenty of Class A’s slot in with no drama — and hookups are full, 50-amp. They’re a touch narrow, and the park uses every inch of space, so don’t expect a sprawling private pad. It’s not an amenity-rich resort either: the pool is genuinely fun, the hot tub’s no slouch, and there’s billiards and pickleball galore — but the dog “park” is a sad little dirt strip and there’s no shade to speak of. The grounds are otherwise well maintained. One honest heads-up: I heard some theft concerns, so be mindful of your gear — though I didn’t run into any trouble myself.

The Live Free RV Verdict: a solid “It Works,” and my 7/10 is entirely about location, not amenities. You tolerate the freeway hum because you’re 20 minutes from everything — Joshua Tree, downtown, the tram, all of it. Come for what’s around the park. If total quiet or big shady sites are non-negotiable, this isn’t your stop.

    The Itinerary.

It feels like you can spend a month in Palm Springs and the surrounding area and never get bored. I had a jam packed week and still left with things I wish I would have had time to do. Below is my suggested itinerary for your visit to Palm Springs.

Day 1: Historic Heights & The "Date" Obsession

    The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Start your day by ascending high above the valley in the world’s largest rotating tram car. It travels through five unique life zones—it’s basically like traveling from Mexico to Canada in 10 minutes. On the day I visited, the bottom was a crisp 65°F and sunny; the top was 24°F, snowing, and blowing a gale!

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Palm Springs, California

At the top, you can follow the walking paths, have lunch, or just enjoy the views from the Patio.

Pro-Tip: Book online. Most folks try to "walk up" and end up sitting in the terminal for two hours. Secure your time slot so you can spend your time on the mountain, not the waiting room.

    Downtown Glitz & Dates

Head downtown to Palm Canyon Drive. It’s retro, artsy, and quirky. Stop into the locally owned shops and chat with the keepers—they are way more fun than the big-box employees and they know the real history of the area.

    Downtown, Palm Springs, California

A few recommendations for places to grab a bite:

    • Lunch: The Farm. A French bistro with a patio that screams “California Chic.”
    • The Legend: Palm Springs has a weird obsession with milkshakes. Since ice cream is my favorite food group, I wasn’t complaining. Great Shakes serves the iconic Date Shake with a donut stuck on the straw. Ingenious.

Day 2: Joshua Tree Highlight Reel (The 8-Mile Slog)

Ty Chapman, Staying at Thousand Trails Palm Springs visiting Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is a week in itself, but you can hit the highlight reel in a day.

    • The Dog Dilemma: Pets are restricted to paved areas. I had to leave Odie (a genuine canine celebrity, mind you) in the rig.

    My "No-Regrets" Joshua Tree Itinerary

Barker Dam & Wall Street Mill (4.5 miles)

Be there by 7:30 AM or prepare to fight for your life for a spot. The light on the old gold mill and vintage car wrecks is pure gold.

    Arch Rock & Heart Rock

Do not skip this. There is a spur trail that leads to Heart Rock—a 10-foot granite heart that is a total desert hidden gem.

Hidden Valley Nature Trail (1.5 miles)

A rock-enclosed valley that feels like a hidden movie set fortress. There is also a picnic area that serves as a great place to eat your lunch!

    Ryan Mountain Summit (3 miles)

1,000 feet of gain, but the 360-degree view of the San Andreas Fault is the only way to wrap the hike. Most people do this first – I saved it as the piece d’resistance.

My suggested itinerary goes like this. Leave Thousand Trails Palm Springs at 6:30 AM arrive at your first hike approximately an hour and a half later. Do Barker Dam * Wall Street Mill First. Go check out Hidden Valley and have lunch. Mosey on over to Ryan Mountain and start your ascent. On the way out, stop at Skull Rock to Get the mandatory photo, then hit Arch Rock. You can then exit on the North Side, avoiding a lot of traffic and you will have followed a logical progression. This Progression is designed around parking and lostical flow as opposed to dificulty of hiking. I actually put the most strenous hike last.

Day 3: The Primary Element of Air

    Wind Farm Tour.

Windmill Tour Near Thousand Trails Palm Springs, Palm Springs, California

I know, paying to get close to something you can see from the road feels silly. But getting up close to these “monsters” is a fascinating lesson in how the Coachella Valley became a green-energy pioneer. You’ll learn the mistakes that led to the modern turbines we see today.

    The Palm Springs Air Museum

Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs, California

After my time at the Pima Air Museum in Tucson, I was impressed. They have the legendary F-14 Tomcat and the hypersonic “Darkstar” prop featured in Top Gun: Maverick. Oh, and a real live stealth bomber – not a replica. How cool is that!!

Pro-Tip: They offer vintage aircraft rides for a fee, but they can sell out weeks in advance. Check the site before you arrive!

Day 4: Giraffes & Garden Zen

    Sunnylands Center & Gardens

Sunnylands Center and Gardens near Thousand Trails Palm Springs, Palm Springs, California

The former Annenberg estate is a quick, beautiful stop. I love the juxtaposition of spiky cacti against snow-capped peaks. The gardens are lush, green, and perfect for a “zen” selfie.

The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens

Ty Chapman, staying at Thousand Trails Palm Springs visiting Living Desert Zoo, Palm Springs, California

I’m generally not a “zoo person”—they usually make me feel guilty. But this place feels like a nature stroll. Feeding the giraffes is a soul-lifting experience, and the free-roaming wallabies are pure happiness. Also – the food at the zoo is actually reasonably priced and delicious!

Day 5: Butterflies & Rodeo Drive East

    Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

Aqua Caliente Cultural Museum, Coachella Valley, Palm Springs, California

Opened in late 2023, this museum is dedicated to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. It’s a 1-hour timed entry and worth every bit of the $10 fee to see how the tribe has thrived here since time immemorial. It also happens to be next to the Spa with its world famous natural hot springs known for their healing properties! You can have a culturally enriching morning followed by a relaxing and uplifting spa day.

    The Architecture Drive: Chasing Butterflies

Example of Modernism and Architecture, Coachella Valley, Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs is famous for Modernism and specifically, Butterfly Roofs. I used to detest Ranch-style homes—I thought they were ugly. Palm Springs changed my mind.

    • Old Las Palmas: The “Movie Star” neighborhood. Look for the Kaufmann House and Elvis’s Honeymoon Hideaway.
    • Twin Palms: This is the “Alexander” neighborhood. Look for those “wings” reaching for the sky.
I personally enjoyed the homes on Apache Road and Navajo Drive. Some amazing examples of Modernism – one complete with classic cars from the era. How cool is that???

    El Paseo Shopping

Example of Modernism and Architecture, Coachella Valley, Palm Springs, California

Wrap your trip at the “Rodeo Drive of the Desert.” From Louis Vuitton to Rolex, you can blow your RV maintenance fund in minutes. The window shopping and people-watching are delightful.

    Ty's TakeAways!

Palm Springs is an amazing place with so much to offer. I think part of what impressed me is just how much history and culture stem from the Coachella Valley. It's not a has-been, it's a always-will-be!

Until I sat down to write this, I had no idea how much I’d actually packed into a few days. If there is one downside to my itinerary, its that it might feel rushed.  Because - its a bit rushed. I tried to see so much and do so much!

    A Few other quick notes:

    • Talk to the Locals: Seriously, the shopkeepers downtown are a riot. They are locally owned and way more engaging than your average retail worker.
    • The Ranch Revolution: I officially retract my hatred for Ranch houses. The "Butterfly" roof is a vibe I can get behind.
    • The Coachella Mix: From hippy vibes to glitzy Hollywood history and Vegas-level gaming at the Agua Caliente Casinos, there is something for everybody here.
    • Modernism Week.If you can - come during Modernism week and plan your Palm Springs Adventure way in advance! You can get historic home tours and other special events - but the tickets sell out fast!
