⭐ My Take

One & Done

Fine if you want to see a few things in San Diego. But you’re 45 minutes away, and honestly — I’d just pay retail somewhere closer to the action.

⭐ My Take

It Works

Solid in-and-around-LA stop, and that big pretty pool doesn’t hurt. Not a bucket-list park, but if you’re in the area it absolutely works.

California TT Trip Reports

California is a TT dream land with parks galore! I got to explore wine country (Napa and Sonoma), big cities (San Diego, LA, and San Francisco), and great riding and hiking (Pinnacles National Park). So much to see and do you just gotta go!

California Mountain Biking

From SoCal desert singletrack to the birthplace of mountain biking in Santa Cruz, to the legendary redwood forests of Marin — California MTB is its own world. Here’s where I’ve ridden.

Some Thoughts and Highlights:

Wilderness Lakes is my favorite California TT park so far! Yes, the system of “canals” which makes this the “Venice” of the Thousand Trails System is a bit cheesy. But its cheesy in the best of ways!

San Francisco was the highlight of the whole California arc. Alcatraz at night. The Golden Gate on foot. SFMOMA β€” which I’d put just below the MusΓ©e d’Orsay but above most American museums I’ve visited. A Giants game. All of it while parked 20 minutes away in Pacifica with Odie. That’s the full-timer lifestyle at its best.

The Central Coast surprised me. Pinnacles National Park, Big Sur, Carmel β€” these are legitimately world-class destinations sitting right outside TT campgrounds that cost me nothing per night. If you’re a TT member who’s never done California, you’re leaving serious value on the table.

Useful Resources

🌴 Southern California

  • Coachella Valley Trails (Palm Springs area) β€” The gateway to desert singletrack. The area around TT Palm Springs has more riding than most people expect. Think dry, fast, and technical-lite on the lower stuff.
  • Joshua Tree National Park β€” Not MTB, but one of the most visually striking day trips from TT Palm Springs. Worth every minute.
  • San Gabriel Mountains (near Soledad Canyon) β€” TT Soledad Canyon sits right in the foothills. The trails here are legit intermediate riding in the Angeles National Forest.
  • Pio Pico State Historic Park β€” Walking distance from TT Pio Pico. One of the most underrated TT locations for history buffs β€” the original Californio rancho culture in one spot.

🌳 Central California

  • Pinnacles National Park β€” Easily the best day trip from TT San Benito. Rock climbing, condor spotting, cave hiking, wildflowers in spring. Go to the West side for the best cave system.
  • Wilder Ranch State Park (Santa Cruz) β€” About 45 minutes from TT Morgan Hill. Coastal bluff trails with Pacific Ocean views β€” probably the most visually dramatic MTB I did in California. No dogs on trails.
  • Soquel Demonstration State Forest β€” The Flow Trail here is one of the best 3+ miles of flow trail I’ve ridden anywhere. 45 min from Morgan Hill. No e-bikes β€” pedal only.
  • Harvey Bear Ranch County Park β€” 10 minutes from TT Morgan Hill, intermediate-friendly, oak forest and lake views. Where I started my Central Coast riding days.
  • Monterey & Carmel β€” About an hour from TT San Benito. The 17-Mile Drive, Cannery Row, and Carmel-by-the-Sea are all legitimately worth the drive.
  • Big Sur β€” Day trip from San Benito. One of those drives you just have to do β€” there’s no substitute for seeing it in person.

🏝️ Bay Area & Northern California

  • Mount Tamalpais State Park (Marin) β€” The birthplace of mountain biking. Literally. Fire road descents, single track, Pacific views. An hour from TT San Francisco. I rode here and it earned every bit of its legend.
  • Alcatraz β€” Do the evening tour. The day tours are fine but the evening experience is a completely different vibe β€” smaller crowd, better lighting, way more atmospheric. Book weeks in advance.
  • SFMOMA β€” One of the best art museums I’ve been to in the US. I’d put it just below the MusΓ©e d’Orsay. Worth a full half-day minimum.
  • Sausalito Ferry from SF β€” Take the ferry over, walk the waterfront, have lunch, come back. One of the best $20 you’ll spend in the Bay Area.
  • Sonoma Wine Country (near Russian River) β€” TT Russian River is in Cloverdale, literally inside wine country. Lake Sonoma, Armstrong Redwoods, and Safari West are all within 30 minutes.
  • Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve β€” Free to enter on foot. Old-growth coast redwoods β€” some over 1,400 years old. One of the best easy hikes in NorCal, 15 minutes from TT Russian River.

🚲 Camping & Booking Tools

  • Thousand Trails β€” No state rewards TT membership more than California. 12 parks, from the desert to the redwoods. If you travel here for a full season, the membership pays for itself in weeks.
  • Arvie β€” Non-negotiable in California. The popular state parks and county parks fill months ahead. The Sold-Out-Scan has gotten me into places I never could have booked manually.
  • Reserve California β€” Official booking for all California State Parks. Set an alarm for 7am on your target date β€” reservations open 6 months out and popular parks vanish in minutes.
